Call Center Employees – debunking the myths

This topic came about after a discussion with a co-worker saying that some people would rather lose their house and be on the street than work in a call center. Really? I would rather work in a call center. So I wanted to run down the truths & myths of working in a call center since I’ve been doing it on and off for almost 10 years.


Truth –

You will get that person who has verbal diarrhea and that call normally comes in just a minute or two before your break, lunch or the end of your shift.

You will hear the same question over and over again.

What you learned in your training class probably won’t cover everything you learn once you are out.

You will probably be asked to work overtime on your days off or extra hours during your shift.

Myth –

#1 You get to sit at your desk and browse the internet.

Wrong, wrong, wrong.

#2 It’s a happy environment.

It is what you make it, yes the job is thankfless most of the time. You will get people who just want to vent, curse, or be perverted. But for the customer who are easy to please, there is a gem of a customer who will thank you repeatedly for helping them.

#3 The people are unhappy, sarcastic and hate their jobs.

It’s all perception. If you get bad customer service, report it to their manager, but please remember to do the same for great customer service.

#4 The people who work in call centers are society’s rejects.

*snort, giggles* Sorry.. I’ve met an ivy-league educated person, former caterers, business owners, lawyers, etc at call centers I’ve worked at. If those are society’s rejects… there is a problem.

#5 A chimp would do a better job working at a call center than they could.

I highly doubt it, but I would like to see a chimp go through training and answer the phone, navigate a system, provide answers and forward messages all while having the customer on the phone.

#6 The people at the call center are in control of the programs and do things on purpose to make customers angry.

*sighs* We are in no more control of the program that made the customer angry than we are of the weather. The best we can do is make a note and forward it.  Or if you let us, guide you through the program.

#7 The people that work at call centers are soulless creatures.



Summary Sunday

I went to the doctor this week and was shocked.. okay not shocked a bit horrified to find out I gained 12 lbs since March 2012.  So I decided, enough was enough.. it’s time to do the dreaded thing and workout and get my relationship with food under control.

I love food.

Very much.

But our relationship has to change if I plan on living like I do and not being at risk for a blood clot, diabetes, high cholesterol or anything else related to being “plump”.

When I asked what my ideal weight would be, I almost choked when the doctor suggested for my height 5’8″ I should be 140. Wait.. what? Seriously? I don’t know when I weighted less than 200 lbs, much less 140.

She did suggest setting a goal for 200 and making steps towards it.. and that working out was like going to work, something you just have to do. I disagree. I remember being really close to 200 pounds and working out and liking it. I lifted weights a roommate had at the house and did push ups and sit ups and danced. I felt so proud when I could wear a two piece swimming suit.. mind you it was a chubby girl two piece, but it was a two piece.

So I decided to make the commitment to myself and to you to share my journey of weight loss.. the ups, downs, sideways and slug days of it. Mind you.. I was born with fat rolls and a mini afro.. so these rolls have lots of wear on them and it will be hard to part with them.. but I don’t want to be huffing and puffing just walking up the stairs to work.

In speaking of work.. I am lucky to work at a place that has a gym I can use for free.. my favorite torture device so far has been the elliptical machine.. I have learned I cannot read blogs while working out, but music is a great way to pass the time.

Below is the summary of workouts from the week

7/22 – 20 minutes on the elliptical – done in 10 minute intervals before work and during lunch

7/23 – it’s my day off.

7/24 – i wore ankle weights for about 10 minutes.. and ate pizza.. delicious pineapple & ham pizza and watched movies..

7/25 – nope.. not working out.. *pffft* :p

7/26 – I was having a grouchy mean spirited day.. the last thing I wanted to do was workout

7/27- 23 minutes on the elliptical.. 20 minutes before work and 3 during a break

7/28 – 25 minutes on the elliptical.. 20 minutes before work (the last 3 minutes were brutal!) and 5 during a break.

If you have a smart phone, workout trainer is another good app. Just use the free version and you have lots of work outs you can do that are guided and you can schedule them. I like doing the yoga ones as well as the 15 minute ones.

Flavored Water

This is all over Pinterest and I wanted to share and give it a try. I love flavored drinks.. sodas are definitely out, so is Crystal Light and anything else that contains “juice”… so I wanted to share some infused flavor water.. you just need fruits for. You can either use mason jars to make a individual drink or let it seep in a larger container. Please keep in mind these waters have about a 48 hour shelf life.. so make sure you drink them quickly.

I’m still angry

Today is the 3rd anniversary of my mom’s death.

I am still angry.

I’m angry because I didn’t do enough to be there for her.

I’m angry because the disease that took her – leukemia – has taken more people since.

I’m angry because I can’t forgive myself for all the things I didn’t do when she was alive & well.

I’m angry because… well just because.

I miss her.

I often spend the day reflecting and wondering if she were alive, what would she think of me now?

Would she have approved of the life I’ve led up to this point? Or would she be disappointed and judging?

Most people don’t know I fed her her last meal three years ago, it was hospital food, but I cut up the meat and fed her bite by bite.

How strange a thought/feeling being 27 and feeding your own mother like she was an invalid.. its harsh to say it like that, but she was maybe 140lbs that day, I not only outweighed her by a hundred pounds but I was feeding my mom. I never thought I would have ever seen that day so soon. I figured she would be gray and wrinkled and I would be feeding her in 20-30 years. But she was in a hospital, her mind was sharp she was as normal as she could be, but she was too weak to feed herself. I wanted to cry then, but I swallowed it and fed her. Asking when she was ready for more to drink or another bite.

When I left I told her I would “see her later” thinking she would be released from the hospital, I squooze her hand gently and left. Exhausted as I had witnessed her nearly die the night before, I went to bed.

Getting a call around 1amish with my dad on the phone, he had been there since I left and was asking me to speak to my mom. I told her I loved her. I was beginning to cry it was the moment I had dreaded.

She passed with my dad there a few minutes after 2 in the morning, it was a Sunday.

Her celebration of light ceremony was the next Saturday. One of her best friends from work spoke about her, how she would always get to work early and be cheery and hum to herself. I smiled through tears, realizing I would never hear that again.

I loved her, she was always encouraging me to write, or draw or be artistic in some way.

I just wish she had the chance to see what I’ve been up to these past years. I hope it makes her proud, she knew I had a soft spot for animals even though I only ever had a bird as a teenager, I was fascinated by cats.

She knew about three of my four cats, though she never got to met them, her cancer made her too weak to be around animals.

I think she would have approved of them, especially Boo since he is the cutest and silliest of the bunch.

I have tried to embody the goodness of my mom over the past three years and I hope that she would be proud.. or at least shake her head at me for my silliness.

So today I would ask just one thing of you, my dearest reader.. hug a friend, tell your family you love them and just simply let go of the people/things that have hurt you in the past. Life is too short to hold grudges or not say the important things.

Guilty Pleasures part 2

Time for part two of my list of things I love but feel slightly guilty about..

I enjoy watching Supernatural..why? Because I like the conflicts between the angels and God and the Devil. I have always found that fasinating.. just like I love the Devil’s Advocate, Bedazzled, Constantine, The Shining, etc etc..

Cheesy movies on Syfy.. like Sharknado, Super shark, Lake Placid 4

Despite owning the following movies I will still watch them on tv – Shawshank Redemption & Beetlejuice – oh my goodness.. there is so much to read on that website.. I could get lost for days.. which brings me to another guilty pleasure..

Pinterest.. I have lots hours on that app. I start looking for one thing and next thing I know it’s 3 hours later.

Web comics – I swore I would have grown up from comics.. but nope. There is a web variety now..

Cat videos.. oh my goodness.. cats eating their veggies, saying “No no no”, swimming.. there is no shortage of cat videos.

Disco.. yes disco music.. I love it but I know not everyone shares my enthusiasm.. and I don’t listen to it all the time, only on special occasions.


Guilty Pleasures (food)

I knew this would be a long post and split it in two before hand.. the first is one of my favorite subjects.. food.

Cheese – cheese is awesome.. but it’s oh so bad for you.. shepard’s pie isn’t complete without cheese, tacos without cheese is just meat, all the wonderful things that can be covered with cheese…

Fried Rice – I can’t make it as good as the Chinese place down the road from the house.. but I love love love it.. they have sprouts and peas and carrots and fried rice goodness.

Chocolate – york peppermint patties, carmello, cadbury eggs, milkyway eggs, hershey’s cookies & cream

Jelly Belly Jelly Beans (Belly flops) – I purchased them after a co-worker had some a while back..oh my goodness.. I have to order more. These are the jelly beans that don’t met the standard for Jelly Belly.

Ginger Ale – I love ginger ale.. most people don’t like it or only have it when on a plane but I am such a fan of it.

Rocky Road Ice cream – I want the kind with the marshmallows in it, none of that marshmallow ribbon stuff.. what the heck? Gimme my marshmallows!


Funfetti Cake or Cupcakes or Cookies.. oh my goodness. it’s a party in a box!

It’s the closest I will ever get to having a tyedye cake or cookies..


Premade Mocha.. preferrably the International Delight kind.. It’s so wrong to buy this I know because it admits I’m lazy but this is perfect for my hour long drives to work and for those looooooong 12 hour days.

Soft Boiled Eggs & Toast..

the other half gets grossed out about this.. but there is nothing so perfect than 3 minute soft boiled eggs some toast and some butter on that toast.. nom nom nom..



boiled peanuts.. oh yeah.. get some papertowels and some water or a beer.. because it’s about to get messy!



Skittles are evil

I wanted to share my story of survival in hopes that no one else will fall victim to the evilness of the skittles..

Here is my story –

It was a long time ago.. when I was young and pretty.. wait.. just young. An innocent working in a call center doing what I did best then, answering calls and giving the best customer service I could while on my desk lay the evil incarnate… a plastic container of mint skittles..

in between calls.. I would sacrifice a few to the greater good .. for my breath of course

when suddenly I beheld the evil skittle.. and not knowing any better proceeded to consume it or tried to when it suddenly and viciously attacked me refusing to go the way of its siblings..

so I try to drink something to wash it down

it laughed evilly at my efforts

I tried to send some of its siblings to convince it to go in peace

it went..

or so I thought

until I got a phone call

and that was when the little skittle decided to mess with me

by jumping down the wrong pipe

and causing me to breathe minty fresh goodness..

but I couldn’t breathe (and breathing is essential)

so I ended up getting a ride in my managers camero (it was red)

and going to the er..

(for being choked by a skittle)

and while I’m inhaling and breathing minty goodness… the doctor comes in.. and i try to explain the evil skittle that tried to choke me..

he turns his head and asks..

what’s a skittle?


I’m not sure what expression was on my face when he said that.. but it had to be priceless as I tried to explain that a skittle was about the size of an M&M but this one had a minty filling..

he cackled evilly and decided to give me a muscle relaxer and send me on my way

and my manager drove me back to work

and I sat back down at my desk

still confused about what happened exactly

looked at the container of half eaten mint skittles

handed them to a co-worker

I swore I heard giggling coming from the container

and eyes dilated and the world very slow and a bit fuzzy I tried to give customer service to the best of my ability

drugged or not..

Let this be a warning to all to take care when eating skittles… there may be a rogue skittle in the pack that wants to kill you.

Don’t let it.. open the bag and tell it who is boss.

Don’t let a candy control your day.

Mornings are evil (almost as bad as skittles)

I wanted to  share my discoveries of 14 things I’ve noticed about the morning commute routine..

7 Things I hate about the morning commute

1. people driving with their high beams on at 630 in the morning.. (for those that don’t have to get up at the butt crack of dawn.. before 7ish it’s dark.. so being behind me with high beams on is not going to motivate me to drive any faster)

2. it’s dark going to work

3. i have to wake up at the butt crack of dawn

4. morning people at work are’s like they are zombies until about lunchtime then they try to run you over while getting out of the parking lot going to lunch and then try to run you over again trying to get home

5. gotta go to bed early…before 11pm early (i normally working noon to 10:30pm so i don’t have to go to bed until 11 or midnight)

6. traffic looks like this coming home.. what would take me 45 minutes to get home now takes an hour and then some…

7.  I’m not hungry in the morning.. it’s too early to eat

7 Things I love about the morning commute

1. daylight when i come home – I’m not so vampiric..

2. evening news! (not that I watch it.. but I can.. it’s the thought that counts)

3. dinner at a normal time.. (5-6ish)

4. view of the Bayside Bridge coming to work as the day is beginning.. with the glimmer of light and some clouds is just breathtaking

5. daylight -did I mention that? I love daylight it makes me happy like a bird with a french fry happy

6. the past few evenings I’ve seen a small rainbow in the clouds as I’m close to home.. that’s a sight i can only see when coming home 15 minutes before sunset

7. businesses are still open when i get home.. not just Denny’s and Ihop 🙂
